May Lecture: The Gardens of Los Poblanos, Past and Present

May 11, 2022 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm

Los Poblanos Historic Inn & Organic Farm presents Dr. Armin Rembe Lecture Series at La Quinta
Introducing the Dr. Armin Rembe Lecture Series at La Quinta, occurring monthly. Named in honor of Dr. Rembe, who passed away this spring, and inspired by his love of Los Poblanos, his curiosity, intelligence and community relations, this series aims to celebrate his legacy by promoting stimulating conversations rooted in the core values and mission of Los Poblanos. The lecture series is also a nod to the rich history of La Quinta Cultural Center of the 1930s and 1940s, when the Simms family held lectures and events that promoted the arts. As we work to preserve La Quinta as an important architectural landmark, we also aim to emulate its dynamic programming through our own curated events and experiences. Join us for a culturally rich day at La Quinta by joining us for afternoon tea before the evening lecture.

Judith Phillips is a landscape designer renowned for her work with native and arid-adapted plants in the Southwest. Although plants are Judith’s passion, gardens are more than plants. The way space is apportioned and used, the gestalt of the times and the constraints of climate all play a role. The layouts and the materials chosen to fill those frameworks have changed over the nearly 100 years of Los Poblanos’ “recent” history. Before that, the landscape was essentially what nature provided. The gardens of Los Poblanos began as a collaboration between Ruth Hanna McCormick Simms and Rose Greely, one of the first American woman landscape architects. Today Los Poblanos is an eco-tourism destination with a guest experience carefully orchestrated by the Rembe family. Their dedication to preserving the history and integrity of the site, maintaining the agricultural ties including acequia irrigation, while making Los Poblanos a sustainably profitable enterprise and doing so by supporting local ecology is written in the landscape

Please plan to arrive at La Quinta 15-30 minutes before the start of the lecture to check in. Light beverage offerings will be available for purchase.
